ARTIST STATEMENT:

Nathaniel Pierce was brought up in the midwest where his father, a third-generation stonemason, taught him the value of craftsmanship. From this experience grew an appreciation for the working man, as well as a passion for building things with his hands.

My creative approach stems from years of reflection on historical and contemporary issues concerning social and interpersonal communication.

In response to the theme of tradition for this year’s exhibit I reflect on my own personal history. The knowledge that has been handed down from generations has helped to shape the identities of families and communities alike. But this tradition would not have survived if it wouldn’t have been for the communication that has taken place over the generations. Communication is a fundamental part of tradition. Equity highlights the importance of communication in a way that references the significance of the past and the history of those traditions.
