Artist’s Statement:
Dudali’s parts emerge from the ground find their way up the tree of their own evolution. Gradually assembling himself, partially assembled Dudali punctuates the tree trunk all the way to the top, where proudly standing a fully formed Dudali emerges waving to the public on the ground.
Beju demonstrates the evolution of the character he created, Dudali. Is Dudali intelligent design? Beju would like to think so, for Dudali is feigned simplicity.
About the Artist
Born in Cognac, France in 1957. Self-taught, Béju began his career as an at the age of 28. His earliest works are a set of “trompe l’oeil” wood carvings, followed by assemblies of recycled materials. Today, he concentrates his efforts on large public art sculptures based on his humanoid character Dudali. Through candid shapes and forms, using unaltered pipes and connectors, Dudali engages in the most eloquent body language and storytelling allowing observers to relate and immerse themselves in the artwork.
Inspired by early simplistic yet eloquent cave art from his country of origin, Beju qualifies his Dudali creations as feigned simplicity; the simpler the form the more complex it becomes to express a concept.
Today, Dudali is present in several countries around the world and has been awarded the following:
- 2022 Award for Architecture and design 4th international Golden Trezzini from St Petersburg, Russia.
- 2021 Award for Exceptional work in the arts by CASF, the Construction Association of South Florida.
- 2016 Award for High Artistic Creativity by Pinacotheque Museum, Luxembourg.
